The three official bonuses that change outcomes

These are the only scored bonuses in the GKS guideline. Each is a percentage of the document screening total — not the entire selection process.

Three bonuses written into the guideline

These percentages are applied to the document screening (서류심사) stage total. The TOPIK bonus is flat — Level 3 and Level 6 earn the same amount.

+10%
TOPIK Level 3+
Flat rate — Level 6 earns no more than Level 3.
+5%
Science & Engineering
Applicants to STEM departments.
+5%
Korean War veteran descendant
Applies to Turkish applicants and 15 other combat-troop nations.
iImportant nuance: These are percentages of the document screening stage total, not the entire selection. The TOPIK bonus is not tiered; Level 3 and Level 6 both earn the same 10% (though Level 5–6 exempts the language year + adds a monthly grant).

The +5% bonus most applicants don't know about

Türkiye is one of 16 nations that sent combat troops to the Korean War. Descendants of those veterans earn official additional points.

How to qualify

  • Your grandfather or great-grandfather served in the Korean War (1950–1953)
  • You can document the lineage through official family records
  • The embassy verifies the claim during the application process
  • Applies to both Embassy and University tracks

Qualifying countries (combat troops)

  • Türkiye — one of the largest contingents
  • USA, UK, Canada, Australia
  • France, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg
  • Greece, Thailand, Philippines, Colombia
  • Ethiopia, South Africa, New Zealand

Why this matters for Turkish applicants

Türkiye sent the second-largest combat force after the USA. Many Turkish families have Korean War veterans in their lineage but never think to check. Combined with TOPIK 3+ (+10%) and a STEM field (+5%), a Turkish applicant with veteran lineage could earn up to +20% in bonus points — a decisive advantage within the country quota.

TOPIK Level 3+ earns +10% — but there's more

At application stage

  • TOPIK is not required to apply
  • Level 3+ earns a flat +10% bonus on document screening
  • Level 3 and Level 6 earn the same bonus
  • Submit your TOPIK certificate with other documents

After acceptance

  • Level 3 minimum required to start the degree program
  • Level 5–6 exempts the 1-year language course
  • Level 5–6 earns an additional ₩100,000/month stipend bonus
  • Certificate is valid for 2 years

Science & Engineering applicants earn +5%

Applicants to eligible STEM departments receive an automatic 5% bonus on the document screening score.

What counts as STEM

The guideline uses the Korean classification for science and engineering fields. Broadly, this includes:

  • Computer Science & IT
  • Electrical/Electronic Eng.
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Materials Science
  • Biotechnology
  • Environmental Science
  • Physics, Chemistry, Math
  • Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Agricultural Sciences
  • Architecture (some programs)
iWhether a specific department qualifies depends on the university's classification. If in doubt, check with the university's GKS coordinator.

Evaluation preferences are not additional points

A separate section in the guideline with no numeric score — it breaks ties. This is what most consultancies conflate.

Undergraduate (GKS-U)

  • Overseas Koreans
  • Low-income / underprivileged applicants
  • Applicants to science & engineering
  • High TOEFL/IELTS score
  • Majors linked to regional RISE plans (new in 2026)
  • Recommendation by a governor / mayor (rarely known)

Graduate (GKS-G)

  • Overseas Koreans
  • Low-income / underprivileged applicants
  • Science/engineering at a Type B university (both together)
  • Current academics in science/engineering
  • Applicants from ODA recipient countries — Türkiye is not one
  • High TOEFL iBT / IELTS score

Türkiye's role in the Korean War

Türkiye is one of the 16 combat-troop nations and among those with the heaviest proportional casualties.

21,212
troops deployed
721
killed in action
3,244
total casualties

First deployment: 17 Oct 1950 · First engagement: 12 Nov 1950 · Main force presence lasted until summer 1954. Also 2,111 wounded, 168 missing and 244 prisoners of war.

How to prove veteran descendant status

Who qualifies

Key term: "lineal ascendant" (직계존속) = direct ancestral line. No generation limit is stated.

  • The veteran's child
  • The veteran's grandchild (most common)
  • The veteran's great-grandchild — yes, included
  • Maternal or paternal line — either works

Who does NOT qualify

Collateral relatives are not accepted — the most common wrong assumption.

  • The veteran's niece/nephew
  • Relation through an uncle or aunt
  • The veteran's sibling or their children
  • Relation by marriage (in-laws)

Required documents — two pieces

1
Veteran certificate (official service record)

Issued by the applicant's own government — a Korean authority is not required. In Türkiye: military service records via the Ministry of National Defence or an official record via the veterans' association.

2
Proof of the family relationship chain

For Türkiye the ideal document is a detailed civil registry record (Vukuatlı Nüfus Kayıt Örneği) showing the full generational chain up to the veteran, with apostille + certified Korean/English translation.

3
Attach to the application

This is an optional, "submit only if applicable" document (#14 in 2026 GKS-U, #18 in GKS-G). If you qualify, always attach it — no document, no points.

Türkiye-specific things to know

!

Very narrow quota

Per the 2026 GKS-U announcement, Türkiye's embassy quota was 1 U-GKS + 1 R-GKS. In such a narrow field, a 5% veteran bonus can be decisive.

ODA: Türkiye is listed — with a condition

Türkiye is on the OECD DAC ODA list (Upper Middle Income). But the GKS-G clause requires being a current academic professor there — not merely citizenship.

The contest-award claim

The claim that K-Pop / Korean speech contest awards earn extra points is widespread but has no basis in the official guideline. Cultural Center scholarships are separate programs.

Don't confuse: two different programs

GKS veteran descendant bonus

An extra point within the scholarship to study in Korea. The subject of this page.

Korean Veterans' Descendants Scholarship

A separate program: financial aid from the Korean Consulate for veterans' descendants studying at universities in Türkiye. Check with the Consulate.
