Choosing universities: Type A/B and the "SKY trap"

A poor selection strategy alone can get you eliminated. Embassy track: 3 universities; university track: 1.

A/B

Type A and Type B

Type A = Seoul/capital region. Type B = regional universities. At least 1 of your 3 must be Type B — otherwise you're eliminated.

The "SKY trap"

Picking only the most competitive schools (SNU, Korea, Yonsei) doesn't help — it eliminates you early. Balance your choices.

R-GKS (regional track)

For Type B universities only; quotas can be far larger. The smartest route for high-competition countries.

In two specialization tracks — R&D and Global Network — NIIED publishes exact seats per university and department. Every number below comes from the official 2026 GKS-G guidelines.

!Why this table matters: the R&D and Global Network tracks are the least known routes into GKS, yet they are the only ones with concrete department-level seats. Where an embassy quota might be 1–2 people for a whole country, a single department here can take 20–25. If your field matches — mechatronics, pharmacy, materials, public policy — you are applying into a far shallower pool. These tracks are graduate-only and you apply directly to the university.
