i Important nuance: These are percentages of the document screening stage total, not the entire selection. The TOPIK bonus is not tiered; Level 3 and Level 6 both earn the same 10% (though Level 5–6 exempts the language year + adds a grant).

Evaluation preferences (not additional points)

A separate section in the guideline with no numeric score — it breaks ties. This is what most consultancies conflate.

Undergraduate (GKS-U)

  • Overseas Koreans
  • Low-income / underprivileged applicants
  • Applicants to science & engineering
  • High TOEFL/IELTS score
  • Majors linked to regional RISE plans (new in 2026)
  • Recommendation by a governor / mayor (rarely known)

Graduate (GKS-G)

  • Overseas Koreans
  • Low-income / underprivileged applicants
  • Science/engineering at a Type B university (both together)
  • Current academics in science/engineering
  • Applicants from ODA recipient countries — Turkey is not one
  • High TOEFL iBT / IELTS score
Rounds

What each round evaluates

Interviews are mainly in the embassy track round 1. There is no interview at the NIIED round.

The university track has 2 rounds (university → NIIED); some universities run their own interview.

Interview preparation

Format varies by country: typically ~10–15 min, a panel (embassy officers + a professor), mostly English (some Korean), online or in person.

Interview do's

  • Keep answers consistent with your documents
  • Explain the Study Plan concretely, by semester
  • Add personal, sincere motivation
  • Prepare a basic self-intro in Korean
  • Be punctual; answer clearly and briefly

Interview don'ts

  • Contradict your own documents
  • Give rote, cliche, one-dimensional motivation
  • Ramble with vague, long answers
  • Appear to know zero Korean
  • Skip your return/contribution plan
